General Questions

Please find below some general questions and answers which I frequently get asked during consultations:

What conditions do you treat?
I specialise in treating hip and knee arthritis, complex lower limb trauma, and failed or problematic joint replacements. I also offer hip resurfacing for younger, active patients.
Do I need a referral to see you?
If you are seeking NHS treatment, you will typically need a referral from your GP. For private consultations, you can book an appointment directly.
What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring any relevant medical records, a list of medications, and details of previous treatments.

If you have had any X-rays or scans, please inform my secretary before your appointment. This may help avoid unnecessary repeat imaging and associated costs if your existing scans are relevant to your current condition.

If you have any previous scans or medical records, please let my secretary know before your appointment at 01902 936 690, as this may help avoid unnecessary tests.

What is the cost of a consultation?
If you have health insurance, your consultation is typically covered, provided your insurer has approved your appointment with me.
For self paying patients:
New consultation £190-210
Follow up appointments £120
What are the costs of private treatment?

The cost depends on the procedure and whether you are self-funding or using private health insurance.
A detailed estimate will be provided during your consultation. Please feel free to include specific questions you have on the contact form.

What Happens During the Consultation?

Your consultation is an important step in understanding your condition and finding the best treatment for you. Here’s what to expect:

Discussion of Your Symptoms
I will ask about your pain, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it affects your daily life.
Medical History Review
We will go over your general health, previous injuries, past treatments, and any medications you are taking.
Physical Examination
I will carefully assess your hip or knee, checking for tenderness, movement limitations, and any signs of instability or inflammation. A chaperone is available during the examination if you would like one. Medical examination gowns are provided, but you may feel more comfortable wearing shorts for the assessment.
Review of Any Existing Scans
If you have had previous X-rays, MRIs, or other imaging, I will review them to help with diagnosis. If further tests are needed, I will explain why and discuss the next steps.
Diagnosis & Treatment Plan
Based on the assessment, I will explain the likely cause of your symptoms and discuss the best treatment options, whether non-surgical (such as physiotherapy or injections) or surgical if necessary.
Time for Questions
You will have time to ask any questions or raise concerns about your condition or treatment options. I aim to ensure you feel fully informed and confident in the next steps.
