Ceramic hip resurfacing: An option to consider
As a hip surgeon based in the West midlands, Mr. Khaldoun Bitar is pleased to offer ceramic hip resurfacing in Wolverhampton, providing patients with an innovative, bone-preserving alternative to traditional hip replacement. This innovative implant was recently approved for use in the UK. This new option provides a bone-preserving alternative to traditional metal-on-metal resurfacing, with promising benefits for certain patient groups.
What is ceramic hip resurfacing?
Hip resurfacing is a surgical technique that caps the femoral head rather than replacing it entirely, preserving more of your natural bone. The new ceramic system uses advanced ceramic materials instead of metal, which helps avoid metal ion release associated with metal-on-metal implants. This ceramic option is especially promising for female patients and men with smaller femoral head sizes, who historically have had fewer suitable resurfacing options. Benefits of ceramic materials
- Reduced wear and tear thanks to durable ceramic bearings
- No metal ions, which can be a concern with metal implants
- Expands resurfacing suitability to women and patients with smaller femoral heads
- Modern ceramic materials have improved safety and longevity compared to earlier designs
While metal hip resurfacing has a long track record and remains a good choice for many, ceramic provides an important alternative tailored to patient needs.
Is ceramic safer than metal resurfacing?
It is early to say! There is no perfect material that fully replicates natural cartilage. However, ceramic tends to be harder and more resistant to wear than metal, which can be an advantage. However, earlier ceramic implants had unique challenges such as squeaking and a higher risk of fracture. Modern ceramic materials have improved significantly. While ceramic resurfacing appears to be superior overall to metal in terms of wear and metal ion release, the implant procedure itself is still relatively new. Clinical trial patients have shown very promising outcomes up to six years after surgery, but longer-term data is still being collected. As with any implant, ongoing monitoring and individual assessment remain essential.
Is the implant right for you?
Ceramic hip resurfacing may be suitable if you:
- Are younger or highly active with hip arthritis
- Prefer to avoid metal implants
- Have good bone quality for resurfacing
- Are female or a male who is not suitable for a metal resurfacing
Your suitability depends on your individual anatomy and lifestyle, which we will discuss in detail during consultation.
